How widely is the PI Cognitive Assessment used?
The PI Cognitive Assessment is one of the most widely used pre-employment cognitive tests in the world. Over 10,000 companies across 90+ countries use Predictive Index assessments, and 5.7 million people completed PI assessments in 2024 alone.
If you’ve been asked to take a “PI test,” “Predictive Index assessment,” or “cognitive assessment” as part of a job application, there’s a good chance this is the test they mean.
Which industries use the PI Cognitive Assessment?
The Predictive Index is used across virtually every industry, but it’s most heavily adopted in:
Technology and software. Tech companies use the PI Cognitive Assessment for engineering, product, and leadership roles where fast learning and problem-solving are critical.
Financial services and banking. Analytical roles in finance frequently require cognitive assessment scores, particularly for positions involving data analysis, risk assessment, and client advisory.
Healthcare. Hospital systems and healthcare organizations use PI assessments for administrative, management, and clinical leadership positions.
Manufacturing and logistics. Operations and supply chain roles use the test to identify candidates who can learn complex processes quickly.
Consulting and professional services. Consulting firms value cognitive speed and adaptability, making the PI Cognitive Assessment a natural fit for their hiring process.
Retail and consumer goods. Large retailers use PI assessments for management-track positions and corporate roles.
Why do companies use a cognitive assessment?
Companies use the PI Cognitive Assessment because cognitive ability is one of the strongest predictors of job performance, particularly for roles that involve learning new information, solving problems, and adapting to change.
The test measures how quickly you can process new information - not what you already know. This makes it useful for hiring across different educational backgrounds and experience levels. A candidate with a non-traditional background who scores well demonstrates the ability to learn on the job.
Employers typically use the PI Cognitive Assessment alongside other evaluation methods - interviews, the PI Behavioral Assessment (a separate personality-style assessment), resume review, and work samples. It’s one data point, not the only one.
Does every role require the same score?
No. Companies set different score thresholds depending on the role. A general guide based on published norm data:
- Entry-level and operational roles: 20th-40th percentile is often sufficient. These roles prioritize reliability and consistency.
- Mid-level professional roles: 40th-70th percentile. Moderate complexity, some independent decision-making.
- Senior and strategic roles: 70th percentile and above. Fast learning, complex decisions, adapting to new information.
- Technical and analytical roles: Often 80th percentile or above, particularly in data science, engineering, and finance.
The average score is approximately 20 out of 50, based on a norm group of approximately 288,000 test takers. You typically won’t be told the threshold for your specific role.
How do I know if my employer uses the PI test?
You’ll know because they’ll tell you. The employer (or their recruiter) sends you an email invitation through the Predictive Index platform with a link to take the assessment. The email usually comes from an @predictiveindex.com address or directly from the company’s HR team.
If you’re not sure which cognitive test a company uses, check the job listing or ask the recruiter directly. The preparation strategies are similar across cognitive tests, but knowing the specific format helps you practice more effectively.
Does my score transfer between companies?
No. Each company administers the PI Cognitive Assessment independently. Your score at Company A is not shared with Company B. If you apply to three companies that all use the PI Cognitive Assessment, you’ll take the test three separate times.
The Predictive Index recommends a waiting period of at least 2 years between official administrations, but this policy is enforced by each employer individually. Some are strict about it, others are not.
What if I’m applying to a company that uses the PI test?
Prepare. The PI Cognitive Assessment has a specific format - 50 questions, 12 minutes, three question types mixed together - and that format rewards familiarity. Practice improves scores by 10-20%, primarily through faster pattern recognition, better time management, and strategic skipping.
You can’t predict exactly which questions will appear, but you can become familiar with every question type so that nothing on the real test surprises you.
